Meet the team: Jess

What is your role at Tutor The Nation?

Director of School and Pupil Partnerships

What does your role entail?

My role involves building and maintaining relationships with schools, ensuring that pupils receive the support they need, and managing the entire tutor-pupil matching process. I oversee the journey of 300+ volunteer tutors, providing ongoing support serving as the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Tell us about an inspirational teacher who taught you.

Both my A Level Business teachers, Mr Foster and Mr Grimshaw. They were both so knowledgeable and approachable in their subject area. Always going above and beyond with an ability to build holistic relationships with pupils, like myself, in order to help us achieve our very best.

How did you get into the Charity and Education sector?

I have worked with a couple of different charities before joining Tutor The Nation. I first worked at the National Lobster Hatchery in Padstow, Cornwall. Here I helped them to develop their website and social media, and in my spare time, looked at the cute baby lobsters! I also completed the Teach First Leadership Development Programme back in 2020, where I started my journey to become a fully qualified teacher working with disadvantaged students to improve their outcomes.

What’s your most memorable moment with Tutor The Nation so far?

It’s only been two months, but definitely meeting some of our amazing Ambassadors at the training day last month was great! It was so lovely to get to know some of our incredible volunteers for the first time.

What do you do in your spare time?

My parents live in Cornwall and I enjoy getting down to the beach and sea swimming as much as possible! I also really enjoy running and cooking (not baking! That’s Anna and Sophia’s forté). I am hoping to try and get into Padel over the next couple of months!

Name 5 people you would have at a dinner party (alive or dead)

My Nan (because I miss her cackle of a laugh every day), Sam Thompson because of the Golden Retriever energy, Gordon Ramsey (to either cook or judge the inadequate food served), and finally Louis Theroux sat next to Katie Hopkins.

Where is your dream holiday location?

Probably more like my next holiday destination, but I would love to travel around the Philippines as it’s a country I haven’t yet travelled to in South East Asia and looks so beautiful!

What was your favourite subject at school?

Geography!
