Tutors of Christmas Day 9: Ismat Ahmed

Ismat, who joined Tutor The Nation as a volunteer in May, shares her experience of volunteering.

Volunteering as a tutor with Tutor The Nation has been a fantastic and enjoyable experience. It has been incredibly rewarding to tutor A-Level History with my Year 13 student since they were in Year 12 and support them in improving their exam practice skills, their confidence and revision strategies for History. Being a tutor has allowed me to provide engaging and interactive lessons on the Tutor The Nation whiteboard, which has helped my student to engage in interactive activities and feel supported throughout the lesson. The engaging interactive lesson activities that I have provided have significantly improved my student’s enthusiasm for A Level History, as they have actively participated throughout the lesson and tested themselves for History with mind maps, essay plans and answering exam style questions.

As a tutor, I have developed my educational leadership, communication and online tutoring skills by volunteering for Tutor The Nation. In terms of my educational leadership skills, I have developed this skill by leading online tutoring lessons on a one-to-one basis and tailoring my lessons to assist the student with their individualised learning needs. I have also enhanced my communication strategies by regularly interacting with the student throughout the lesson by asking questions to develop their ideas further about the discussed topics, discuss what they have learnt in class and encouraging the student to demonstrate their knowledge by testing them on key topics that would be covered within the lesson. Finally, being a volunteer tutor has enhanced my online tutoring skills by learning how to plan effective and engaging lessons that improve the student’s understanding of the subject alongside assisting the student to grow and develop as an individual with online tuition, which has effectively prepared them the skills and knowledge that they need for university and beyond.

I would definitely recommend volunteering as a tutor at Tutor The Nation because the team are incredibly friendly and supportive, as they provide all tutors and ambassadors with excellent online training courses and support them with any queries or concerns that volunteers may have. Although it looks great on a CV to help disadvantaged pupils, it is also a fantastic opportunity to shape the futures of young people by helping them to develop as individuals and make education fairer for all students.
