FAQs

What does the application process look like?

Once you fill out the sign-up form, we will get in contact with you via email to get to know you better, ask you to fill out a TutorCruncher profile, and run a background check. Following this, we run a 1-hour safeguarding and tutor training session. Then we can match you with a pupil and get you tutoring!

Do I need previous experience tutoring?

No, previous experience is great but not necessary. Four of the top private tutoring companies have joined forces to help us support you. The Tutor The Nation team is always on hand to provide further support. As a university student or recent graduate, you have already proven your ability to learn as you become an expert in your specific field. What is more, you are familiar with the material having only gone through the same process a few years ago. You are set to be a positive and relatable role model.

What will I be tutoring?

We are currently tutoring pupils in years 10-13 preparing for their GCSEs and A-Levels.

Where are your roles based?

All volunteering is based remotely. This way you can make a difference from the comfort of your own home.

What’s the commitment?

It is entirely up to you. We ask for a minimum of 1 hour a week for the duration of one State school term. Volunteering for a full academic year is best. You can choose how many pupils you want to tutor, and this can change over time. We also ask you to spend a little time tutorial planning to make your lessons as successful as possible.

What equipment do I need to tutor online?

All you need is a desktop, laptop, or tablet, a webcam, and internet access. Our online tutoring is powered by Bramble, the UK’s leading live online tutoring platform. Google Chrome provides support for all the cutting edge, interactive features of the Bramble platform.

What support do you offer for people new to tutoring?

Tutor The Nation is supported by four of the top tutoring agencies who have produced a first-class package of training resources and top tips for tutoring online. In addition, Tutor The Nation’s team is always on hand and dedicated to helping tutors deliver the best lessons possible.

Are volunteers required to have a DBS check?

Yes, we require all tutors to have an Enhanced DBS check. We provide this service as part of our onboarding process.

Are there not already organisations in this space?

There is a government-funded initiative, The National Tutoring Programme, which provides some subsidised tutoring. Our project is completely free; that’s no cost to schools, pupils, parents, tutors, or the taxpayer.

Can I tutor from a different country if I’m tutoring online?

Yes, being online means that we can match pupils with tutors who are best suited to their academic needs no matter where they are.

What are the benefits for me?

We believe there are many benefits for our volunteers. We understand that many university students are themselves finding student life, or the lack of it, difficult. Volunteering provides you with an opportunity to look outwards doing this time of uncertainty. In addition, you will gain invaluable practical experience which will boost your CV and help you stand out from a crowd. At a time when tutors are so sought after, you will have the advantage of tutoring experience which could become a flexible way to supplement your income.

I’m a private tutor, can I help?

Yes, please! Why not commit a couple of hours a week of free tutoring to young people who need it most?

Universities

Our volunteers attend over different 25 universities. We are looking to connect with more universities and students’ unions from across the nation to work with and to help recruit volunteers for Tutor The Nation.
